Diamond clarity - what does it mean?

A diamond's clarity is determined by using a contractual scale that grades and informs us about so-called "clarity classes".

According to an international arrangement between CIBJO1 and IDC2 a classification is made by an experienced expert who uses an aplanatic magnifying glass3 and a chromatic one4 that gives a magnification of 1x10 in the daylight or in the light of a special lamp5.

1) Confederation Internationale de la Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfevrerie des Diamants, Perls et Pierres (World Jewellery Confederation)
2) International Diamond Council

3) does not deform an image

4) does not colour an image

5) has an appropriate colour and temperature of the light

There are 7 basic clarity classes:

LC (loupe-clean)

These diamonds do not have any inner inclusions or defects.

VVS (Very very small inclusions)

These diamonds which have very very small inclusions and are very difficult to see.

Subclasses: VVS1 and VVS2

VS (Very small inclusions)

These diamonds have very small inclusions but are quite easy to see for an experienced expert, in the magnification of 1x10.

Subclasses: VS1 and VS2)

SI (Small inclusions)

These diamonds have small inclusions and are very easy to see for an experienced expert, in the magnification of 1x10.

Subclasses: SI1 and SI2

P1 (Pigue prim)

These diamonds have inclusions difficult to perceive with the naked eye. Should be observed from the diamond crown's side.

P2 (Pigue secundum)

These diamonds have big and numerous inclusions and are easy to see with the naked eye. These stones are slightly lower in brilliance.

P3 (Pigue tertium)

These diamonds have big and/or numerous inclusions and are very easy to see with the naked eye. These stones are considerably lower in brilliance.

In the jewellery business the diamonds that are used most fequently for setting are in the VS - P1 range. Stones of LC and VVS class are very expensive and rarely used.
